Thank you to Mega Bloks for providing me with samples to review. All opinions are strictly my own, your experience may vary from mine.
When I was a kid, one of my all time favorite toys were my building blocks. There were endless possibilities when it came to creating things and I remember how intrigued my mom was to watch me create something out of nothing. Being a mom myself now, I love watching my children play with MEGA BLOKS just like I did and to see them embrace their creativity and imagination. MEGA BLOKS building sets do an amazing job of allowing children to create worlds their favorite characters can live and play in!
We were given the chance to test out a few of MEGA BLOKS best selling play sets, the Hello Kitty Day at the Boardwalk Set and the Thomas & Friends Blue Mountain Quarry Set! Have both a son and a daughter, these products are perfect for our family and they were beyond stoked to have them show up on out doorstep.
Each set’s packaging was fun and colorful and it was really nice to see that the pieces weren’t hard to get out of box. The Thomas & Friends set actually comes in a self storing bin that becomes part of the adventure!
Heading to the boardwalk!
We set up the Hello Kitty set first. This set is geared towards children 4 and up and the pieces are significantly smaller then normal MEGA BLOKS. There are 2 Hello Kitty characters included in the set and 66 pieces all together. I love that the directions are mainly picture based which makes putting the set together pretty easy. It took us about 15 minutes to set the entire boardwalk up and get Hello Kitty and her friend having some beach side fun! The set can even be added to other Hello KittyMEGA BLOKS sets to create an entire Hello Kitty world!
My daughter LOVED playing with Hello Kitty and having her interact with the fun activities at the boardwalk. She really liked spinning the pretend game wheel and choosing her favorite cotton candy color. The two boardwalk pieces can either stand together or can be separated to create a different looking area. My daughter did have a little trouble getting the Hello Kitty figures into the chairs on the second level but that was easily solved by removing the roof and then setting the figures in the seats.
The Hello Kitty set’s pieces are much smaller then normal MEGA BLOKS Sets for young kids, so be sure to keep the pieces together in a bag or bin. It would be great if MEGA BLOKS would include a little draw string bag with the name of the set on it to keep the small set’s pieces in. This would make keeping all those set pieces in one spot and might reduce the risk of loosing them.
Chugging along with Thomas & Friends!
The Thomas & Friends Blue Mountain Quarry was a little harder to get together than the Hello Kitty set. The set includes one Thomas figure and one quarry car. The figures actually come apart like MEGA BLOKS pieces, so if a piece of Thomas pops off don’t worry, it’s meant to do that. My hubs and my mini man teamed up to put this one together in about 20 minutes. What’s really neat about this set, is that the container turns into part of the set. I also love that it gives you a place to store all your pieces when your done.
My son went BONKERS over this Thomas & Friends Blue Mountain Quarry Set! He sat playing for about an hour (which is insane for a 2 year old to do) making Thomas chug up and down through out the quarry. There are even little coal blocks that Thomas can pick up at the top of the quarry and then haul down to the bottom. I was surprised at how well the set held up with his pushing the train up and down over and over.
I love that this set can be used in conjunction with other Thomas & Friends sets from MEGA BLOKS to create a whole Island of Sodor world! Eventually my mini man decided it was demolition time and started using Thomas to knock down the pillars holding up the track. Luckily we kept the instructions.
To buy or not to buy
Both my kiddos were captivated by each MEGA BLOKS set. Both are well made, colorful and hold up to the play little ones can dish out. There is the matter of recreating the original construction. Unless you have the instructions and create each one a few times to memorize what they look like or where the pieces go, you’ll need to reference the original instructions. All in all, we love the two sets and my kids play with them on a daily basis! I highly recommend both sets!
